THE CASE
Making Skincare Science Visible
Minimalist was introducing a night formula focused on reducing dullness and wrinkles, marking the first time the brand had reinvented its night skincare science.
The visual language needed to communicate that mechanism accurately while remaining aligned with Minimalist's commitment to transparency. Any treatment that felt oversimplified or exaggerated fell outside the brief.
The challenge: Make invisible biological processes understandable without compromising the science behind them.
THE APPROACH
Understanding before designing.
The central challenge was understanding the biology behind the formulation.
We studied the liposomal delivery system, ingredient behaviour, delivery pathways and the transformation of molecules within the skin structure before a single frame was produced.
That research informed every production decision. The molecular sequences depict the delivery system as it functions, rather than as it might be interpreted from the product brief alone.
The sequences were built in Cinema 4D and rendered through Redshift, chosen for the precision of material response and the level of control it provided over how light interacted with translucent biological structures at a microscopic scale.
- The first film explains the science. It visualises the liposomal delivery system and illustrates ingredient behaviour beneath the skin. It is intended for the buyer who wants to understand what they are applying before deciding to trust it.
- The second film brings the product into everyday life. Its compositions are restrained, the lighting carefully controlled, and the product is situated within a nightly skincare routine rather than a laboratory setting. It speaks to the buyer who relates more readily to seeing how the product fits into everyday life than to observing its behaviour at the cellular level.
- From product to microscopic scale.
- At the product level, the visual approach is restrained. Clean compositions, controlled lighting and minimal motion allow the product to command attention without relying on spectacle.
- At the microscopic level, the visual language shifts. Structure, texture and motion make invisible processes legible, while scientific accuracy keeps the visualisation credible to viewers who understand the biology being presented.
