XPENG P7

XPENG launched the P7 with a film built around a large-scale reveal, using a silver curtain to introduce the vehicle and transform the space around it.

THE CASE

A REVEAL BUILT AROUND VFX.

Gwantsi led the production, with Night Wolves Studio brought in for VFX supervision and production across all 32 shots. The scope included curtain simulations, character and object interactions, set extensions, rotoscoping, sky replacements and other shot-specific VFX work.

The production had a tight window from planning through VFX delivery.

The challenge was to integrate the VFX across 32 shots within four weeks. Most shots involved cast or object interactions that required precise frame-by-frame work, while the completed VFX and working files had to remain consistent and ready for Gwantsi’s final compositing.

The P7 went on to receive the Red Dot Award 2026, Product Design and iF Design Award 2026, Product Design / Automotive.

The Approach

MAKING THE REVEAL WORK IN LIVE ACTION.

The silver curtain was the main VFX element of the reveal. We handled its placement and simulation around the P7 and the cast, maintaining the correct layer hierarchy before transferring the final layers to the Gwantsi team.

The VFX work extended beyond the curtain. Set extensions, sky replacements and other shot-specific work were built around the existing production so that the vehicle, cast and environment remained connected within the same frame.

PRECISION ACROSS 32 SHOTS.

Many of the shots involved cast interacting with VFX elements, including elements positioned between the camera and the cast. These required detailed rotoscoping and frame-by-frame work to keep the relationships between the cast, vehicle and surrounding elements consistent throughout each shot.

The two-day outdoor shoot also brought changes in lighting conditions, resulting in differences in the captured data across some shots. Rather than extending the shoot, we addressed those inconsistencies in post and matched the affected shots as closely as possible.

With four weeks from planning to VFX delivery, the work had to keep moving across all 32 shots while maintaining consistency throughout the film.

THE TECHNOLOGY

SIMULATION BUILT FOR THE SHOT.

The silver curtain wraps were simulated in Houdini and developed around the physical conditions of the live-action shoot rather than as a standalone CG element.

The simulation had to work with the P7, cast and environment throughout the reveal, while remaining controllable across individual shots.

Simulation, shot development and VFX integration were developed together, giving the team control over the curtain’s physical behaviour while keeping it grounded in the live-action footage.

THE RESULT

A LAUNCH FILM BUILT AROUND THE REVEAL.

The XPENG P7 launch film was completed across 32 VFX shots within the four-week production window, with VFX integrated across the curtain reveal, character interactions and surrounding environment.

The completed VFX shots and structured working files were handed over to Gwantsi for final compositing.
